Since we mentioned the door being set up correctly it is important to note, too, that the strike plates and any screws are the proper length and are not causing the door to sag. The strike plates for a deadbolt need the screws to secure it to the wall.  

Speaking of deadbolts, it is important that these are tested with the deadlatch. What do we mean by this? If the door is shut, the deadlatch should not hit the strike plate or otherwise fall into it. Proper alignment is key. If you have to push or pull on the door for the lock to work, then something might be off. The deadbolt needs to extend completely.  

Are there any other points to focus on when it comes to maintenance for door locks? The answer is yes. It is important that you sometimes clean your door locks. How can you do this? Check the suggestions offered by the manufacturer, if in doubt. But know that mild soap just might do the trick. We do not suggest using chemical cleaners as these might cause damage. 

Lubricating the locks is another important thing to do. You want to make sure that the inside of locks are kept in good shape, not just the exterior. We recommend spraying a lubricant in the lock, then taking the key and inserting it and removing it. Make sure you wipe debris or dirt off the key in this process as some grime might stick to the key.
